Innovative Alternative to Sprawl
Friday January 19, 2007

To Whom It May Concern:

The progressive nature of the Story Mill project seems very much in line with the conscientious culture of Bozeman. With so much local concern centered on the rapid consumption of open space for development, Story Mill appears to be an innovative alternative to the sprawl we see in Belgrade, on 19th and elsewhere in the valley. I view this type of development as a very positive step for our community.

As an owner of several local businesses, I realize the value of energy efficient and high-quality retail space. Main Street does not have space available, and when it is available the rent is too expensive for most entrepreneurial start-ups. Other locations require increased transportation time for employees and customers. I am interested in commercial space at the Story Mill project. Additionally, I’m intrigued by what the developers are proposing in the way of “green design” that may allow for more realistic square footage cost as well as lower operating costs due to built-in energy efficiency. While I realize this all has to play out, in concept this is important in a region where real estate and energy costs put small businesses at a disadvantage compared to other geographic locations.

My retail space is located on Griffin Drive, but I live up Bridger Canyon. Of particular interest to me are the live/work spaces that would allow loft space above a retail location. A perfect solution for our family to commute less and enjoy life more.
