Nationally and internationally, there is a strong movement towards sustainable development and, in particular, LEED (Leadership and Education in Environmental Design) Certification. As a local entrepreneur and developer, I feel that the kind of urban infill development represented by the Story Mill project is a move in a positive direction for Bozeman. If this development does indeed achieve a Platinum LEED Certification, it would be a significant win for our community. In my opinion, we need more developers thinking about walking neighborhoods, historic preservation and creating vibrant community centers within the city limits.
My sense of the project is that the vision is completely integrated and cohesive including trail systems, open space, community venues, diverse housing types and mixed use commercial/residential. My hope is that this integrated vision would help ensure its integrity and strengthen its appeal to local home buyers and businesses. The fact that this property exists within the city limits of Bozeman — and that by developing this land we can avoid urban sprawl elsewhere in the Valley — should be particularly appealing to everyone with environmental sensibilities.
